GATE 2017 CS (CS2) – Question 10
An air-pressure contour joins locations of equal atmospheric pressure. The shown contours occur at 0.05 bar intervals. Thunderstorm possibility depends on how rapidly pressure rises or falls across a region. Which region P,Q,R,S is most likely to have a thunderstorm?

Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: (C) R
Explanation
For equal contour increments, closer lines mean a larger pressure gradient: a fixed pressure change occurs over a shorter horizontal distance. The contours are closest near R, so the pressure changes most rapidly there. Therefore region R, option C.
