GATE 2012 CS (CS1) – Question 31

Engineering Mathematics · Probability and Statistics · 1 mark · Multiple choice

X equals −1 or +1 with probability 0.5 each. Find F(−1),F(+1) for its cumulative distribution.

  1. 0,0.5
  2. 0,1
  3. 0.5,1
  4. 0.25,0.75

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (C) 0.5,1

Explanation

A CDF is F(x)=P(X≤x), including the mass at its argument. Thus F(−1)=P(X=−1)=0.5 and F(+1)=1. Option C; excluding equality would incorrectly miss the jumps.
