GATE 2012 CS (CS1) – Question 30

Computer Organization and Architecture · Instruction Pipelining and Pipeline Hazards · 1 mark · Multiple choice

Register renaming in pipelined processors is done

  2. for efficient local-variable/parameter access
  3. to handle certain hazards
  4. for address translation

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (C) to handle certain hazards

Explanation

Renaming gives separate physical registers to unrelated values sharing an architectural register name. This removes false dependencies, namely write-after-read and write-after-write hazards, permitting more overlap. It does not remove a genuine read-after-write dependency. Thus C.
