A product is maintained five years. With language L₁, development effort is LOC/10000 person-years, development cost ₹1000000 per person-year and maintenance ₹100000/year. L₂ needs twice L₁’s LOC, effort LOC/10000, development cost ₹750000/person-year and maintenance ₹50000/year. What L₁ LOC makes total costs equal?

Correct answer: (B) 5000
Explanation
Let L₁ length be N. Its total is 100N+5×100000. L₂ length is 2N, giving total 150N+5×50000. Equating yields 100N+500000=150N+250000, hence N=5000, B. Include both development and the five maintenance years.
