GATE 2010 CS (CS1) – Question 13

Engineering Mathematics · Discrete Mathematics: Sets, Relations, Functions, Partial Orders and Lattices · 1 mark · Multiple choice

How many reflexive relations exist on a five-element set?

  1. $2^{10}$
  2. $2^{15}$
  3. $2^{20}$
  4. $2^{25}$

Practise this question in The GATE Grind →

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (C) $2^{20}$

Explanation

There are 5²=25 possible ordered pairs. Reflexivity fixes all five diagonal pairs as present. Each of the remaining twenty pairs can independently be present or absent, giving 2²⁰ relations, C.
