GATE 2015 CS (CS2) – Question 38

Computer Networks · TCP: Flow Control, Congestion Control, Socket API · 2 marks · Multiple choice

A TCP connection has bandwidth 1048560 bits/s. Let α be the RTT in milliseconds, rounded to the nearest integer, beyond which window scaling is needed. Let β be the maximum window with scaling. Find α,β.

  1. 63 ms,65535×2¹⁴ bytes
  2. 63 ms,65535×2¹⁶ bytes
  3. 500 ms,65535×2¹⁴ bytes
  4. 500 ms,65535×2¹⁶ bytes

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (C) 500 ms,65535×2¹⁴ bytes

Explanation

The unscaled window holds 65535 bytes, or 524280 bits. At 1048560 bits/s it covers 524280/1048560=0.5 seconds of bandwidth-delay product, so scaling is needed beyond about 500 ms. The maximum scale shift is fourteen, giving 65535×2¹⁴ bytes. Thus C.
