GATE 2025 BM – Question 56

Mammalian Cell Biology, Human Anatomy and Physiology · Gastrointestinal System and Homeostasis · 2 marks · Numerical answer

log10(BMR) versus log10(M) is linear with slope 0.75. A 10 kg child has BMR=600 kcal/day. Find BMR for a 100 kg adult, nearest integer kcal/day.

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: 3368 to 3378

Explanation

The log–log slope means BMR=kM^0.75. Taking a ratio eliminates k: adult BMR=600×(100/10)^0.75=600×10^0.75≈3374.05 kcal/day, rounded to 3374. The increase is a power law rather than directly proportional to mass.
