GATE 2016 EE (EE2) – Question 26
The parallel-plate capacitor contains the two side-by-side dielectrics shown. If field in A is 4 kV/cm, the field in B in kV/cm is

Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: (C) 4
Explanation
Both dielectric regions span the same pair of equipotential plates and have the same 2 cm separation. Therefore they have the same voltage difference and field magnitude E=V/d.
The boundary between A and B runs parallel to the field, so tangential E is continuous. Permittivity changes electric flux density D, not this common E. Hence **4 kV/cm, C**.
