GATE 2015 EE (EE2) – Question 43

Power Electronics · Single and three-phase configuration of uncontrolled rectifiers · 2 marks · Numerical answer

The shown rectifier has T1 firing at 30° after the positive-going source zero crossing. Supply is $V_s=100\sin(100\pi t)$ V. Find steady average voltage across R in volts.

Correct answer: 61 to 62

Explanation

The positive half-cycle conducts through T1 only from α=π/6 to π. The opposite half-cycle uses two diodes and conducts for its full π duration.

Thus the average is $(100/(2\pi))[(1+\cos\alpha)+2]$. Substituting α=30° gives $100(3+\cos30^\circ)/(2\pi)$.

This is **61.53 V**, within 61–62 V. The asymmetric one-thyristor bridge does not have the same average formula as a fully controlled bridge.
