GATE 2015 EE (EE2) – Question 42

Power Electronics · DC to DC conversion: Buck, Boost and Buck-Boost Converters · 2 marks · Numerical answer

The switching converter has ideal components and continuous positive inductor current. Its inductor-voltage waveform is +15 V during on-time and −45 V otherwise over period Ts, as shown. Find switch duty cycle.

Correct answer: 0.75

Explanation

Periodic steady state requires zero average inductor voltage, otherwise its current would drift each cycle.

Therefore 15D−45(1−D)=0. Rearrange to 60D=45, giving **D=0.75**. The +15 V level corresponds to the switch-on interval in the drawn boost topology.
