Communications · Digital Communications · 1 mark · Numerical answer

A 4 kHz sinusoidal message signal having amplitude 4 V is fed to a delta modulator (DM) operating at a sampling rate of 32 kHz. The minimum step size required to avoid slope overload noise in the DM (rounded off to two decimal places) is ________ V.

Correct answer: 3.12 to 3.16

Explanation

To avoid slope overload the step size must satisfy $\Delta\cdot f_s\ge\max\left|\frac{dm}{dt}\right|=2\pi f_mA$. So $\Delta\ge\frac{2\pi\times4000\times4}{32000}=\pi\approx3.14$ V.
