GATE 2020 AE – Question 24

Propulsion · Rockets: thrust equation, specific impulse, multi-staging, solid and liquid propellant rockets · 1 mark · Multiple choice

Which rocket-propellant pair is hypergolic?

  1. Liquid hydrogen–liquid oxygen
  2. Unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine–nitrogen tetroxide
  3. RP-1–liquid oxygen
  4. Liquid hydrogen–liquid fluorine

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (B) Unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine–nitrogen tetroxide

Explanation

A hypergolic fuel–oxidizer combination ignites on contact without a separate ignition source. Unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine and nitrogen tetroxide are the standard listed storable hypergolic pair, B. The familiar hydrogen/oxygen and RP-1/oxygen combinations require an ignition system.
