N₂ adsorption on TiO₂ at 75 K gives a linear BET plot of $z/[(1-z)V]$ against $z=p/p^0$, with intercept $4.0\times10^{-6}$ mm⁻³ and slope $1.0\times10^{-3}$ mm⁻³. Find monolayer volume, nearest integer.

  1. 996 mm³
  2. 785 mm³
  3. 690 mm³
  4. 555 mm³

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (A) 996 mm³

Explanation

In BET form the intercept is $1/(V_mC)$ and slope is $(C-1)/(V_mC)$. Their sum equals 1/Vm, so $V_m=1/(0.000004+0.001)=996.016$ mm³. Rounded volume is 996 mm³, A.
