How many g∥ lines are expected for a solution of bis(salicylaldimine)copper(II) containing pure ⁶³Cu and ¹⁴N at 77 K? Nuclear spins for ⁶³Cu, ¹⁴N and ¹H are 3/2, 1 and 1/2.
The copper nucleus gives $2I_{Cu}+1=4$ hyperfine components. Two equivalent nitrogen donors with I = 1 give $2nI_N+1=5$ superhyperfine components for each copper line. The two equivalent imine protons, each I = 1/2, add a three-line splitting. Thus the full specified copper–nitrogen–proton parallel pattern has $4\times5\times3=60$ lines. Ignoring the proton coupling would give only 20 and misses why the hydrogen nuclear spin is provided.
