GATE 2019 BT – Question 30

Engineering Mathematics · Linear Algebra: Matrices and determinants, systems of linear equations, eigenvalues and eigenvectors · 1 mark · Numerical answer

For $$A=\begin{pmatrix}0&6\\p&0\end{pmatrix},$$ find p that makes A skew-symmetric.

Practise this question in The GATE Grind →

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: -6 to -6

Explanation

Skew symmetry requires $A^T=-A$. The diagonal entries are already zero, and the off-diagonal entries must be negatives of one another. Hence p = −6.
