How many possible rooted phylogenetic trees are there for three species?

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: 3 to 3

Explanation

For three labelled species and a fully resolved rooted binary tree, choose which pair forms the sister group. The possibilities are (A,B) with C outside, (A,C) with B outside, or (B,C) with A outside. Thus three rooted binary topologies. An unresolved three-way polytomy is excluded by the usual binary-tree convention used by the key.
