Fundamentals of Biological Engineering · Bioreaction Engineering: Rate law, zero and first order kinetics, Michaelis-Menten kinetics and enzyme inhibition · 1 mark · Multiple choice

Which need NOT be conserved in a biochemical reaction?

  1. Total mass
  2. Total moles
  3. Atoms of each element
  4. Total energy

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (B) Total moles

Explanation

A reaction rearranges atoms into molecules, so molecular count and total moles can change with stoichiometry. Mass and elemental atom counts remain conserved, and total energy is conserved when all exchanges are included. Thus B; conservation of moles is not a general reaction law.
