Which statement about solid CsCl and CaF₂ is INCORRECT?

  1. Cations in both have coordination number 8.
  2. CsCl has a body-centred-cubic-type arrangement and CaF₂ a cubic close-packed arrangement.
  3. Radius ratios Cs/Cl and Ca/F are 0.93 and 0.73 respectively.
  4. Both exhibit close packing.

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (D) Both exhibit close packing.

Explanation

CsCl has eightfold coordination but its two-ion arrangement is not a close-packed structure. In fluorite CaF₂ the calcium sublattice is FCC, with fluoride in all tetrahedral holes and calcium coordination eight. Thus the assertion that both are close packed is false, D. The source’s “bcc type” describes the CsCl motif; its Bravais lattice with distinct ions is primitive cubic.
