GATE 2019 MT – Question 26

Mechanical Behaviour of Materials · Plasticity and yield criteria · 1 mark · Multiple choice

At room temperature and low strain rate (≤0.1 s⁻¹), which metal commonly deforms by twinning?

  1. Fe
  2. Mg
  3. Al
  4. Ni

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (B) Mg

Explanation

Magnesium is HCP and has relatively few easily activated slip systems at room temperature. Twinning accommodates deformation that basal slip alone cannot provide. Al and Ni are FCC with abundant slip systems; ordinary low-rate Fe deformation is mainly slip. Thus Mg, B.
