GATE 2020 EC – Question 35

Engineering Mathematics · Probability and Statistics · 1 mark · Numerical answer

The two sides of a fair coin are labelled as 0 and 1. The coin is tossed two times independently. Let $M$ and $N$ denote the labels of the outcomes of those two tosses. For a random variable $X$, defined as $X=\min(M,N)$, the expected value $E(X)$ (rounded off to two decimal places) is ________.

Correct answer: 0.24 to 0.26

Explanation

$X=1$ only when both tosses give 1, with probability $\frac14$. Otherwise $X=0$. So $E(X)=1\times\frac14=0.25$.
