Two weightless cables of equal length and area support the ends of a light 1 m horizontal bar. Cable 1 has modulus 50 GPa and cable 2 has modulus 200 GPa. A downward force acts at distance x from cable 1, as shown. For equal cable elongations, find x in metres to one decimal.
Equal elongations FL/(AE) with common L, A require T₁/E₁=T₂/E₂. Thus T₂=4T₁ and total force F=5T₁. Moment balance about cable 1 gives T₂×1=Fx. Hence x=4/5=0.8 m. The load must be closer to the stiffer cable so that it carries the larger tension.
