GATE 2026 AR — Planning – Question 65
Peak-hour traffic on a two-lane one-way collector has(count, PCU) pairs: bus(52, 2.50), truck(24, 3.00), car(720, 1.00), motorised two-wheeler(1050, 0.50), auto-rickshaw(275, 0.80), e-rickshaw(410, 0.80), bicycle(90, 0.30). Design capacity is 1300 PCU/hour/lane. Find volume/capacity ratio to two decimals.

Correct answer: 0.72 to 0.85
Explanation
Convert counts to PCUs. Contributions are: buses 130, trucks 72, cars 720, two-wheelers 525, auto-rickshaws 220, e-rickshaws 328 and bicycles 27 PCU/hour. Their sum is 2022 PCU/hour. Two lanes provide capacity 2×1300=2600 PCU/hour. Thus volume/capacity=2022/2600=0.777692, or 0.78. Raw vehicle totals cannot be compared directly with a PCU capacity.
