GATE 2025 AR — Architecture – Question 46

Project Management and Professional Practice · Construction project management techniques e.g. PERT, CPM · 2 marks · Numerical answer

Project paths are P→R and Q→S. Activity(normal weeks, crash weeks, normal₹, crash₹):P(8, 5, 20000, 26000), Q(5, 2, 30000, 33000), R(6, 4, 40000, 52000), S(4, 3, 10000, 13000). Indirect cost is₹5000/week. Find least total cost to complete in 12 weeks, as an integer.

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: 164000 to 164000

Explanation

Normal path durations are 14 and 9 weeks; only P–R needs shortening by 2 weeks. P’s crash slope is₹2000/week; R’s is₹6000/week. Crash P from 8 to 6 weeks at₹4000 extra. Direct cost becomes₹104000. Indirect cost for 12 weeks is₹60000, total₹164000. Crashing the noncritical Q–S path cannot shorten the project.
