GATE 2024 AR — Architecture – Question 47
For a 400 mm storm, runoff coefficients and(existing, proposed) hectares are industrial 0.7:(1500, 800), residential 0.5:(1000, 1200), parks 0.25:(1200, 1000), forest 0.15:(300, 1000). Find runoff reduction in million m³, to two decimals. Assume flat terrain, no outside inflow.

Correct answer: 1.30 to 1.38
Explanation
Existing runoff-weighted area is 1500×0.7+1000×0.5+1200×0.25+300×0.15=1895 ha. Proposed is 800×0.7+1200×0.5+1000×0.25+1000×0.15=1560 ha. Difference 335 ha=3350000 m². Multiply by 0.4 m rain to obtain 1340000 m³, or 1.34 million m³.
