For thermal diffusivity of a homogeneous material, which statements are correct?

  1. It is inversely proportional to thermal conductivity.
  2. It increases when specific heat increases.
  3. Low diffusivity is associated with greater damping of temperature fluctuations.
  4. It is inversely proportional to density.

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (C) Low diffusivity is associated with greater damping of temperature fluctuations.; (D) It is inversely proportional to density.

Explanation

Thermal diffusivity is α=k/(ρc). Holding other quantities fixed, it increases with conductivity and decreases with density and specific heat, so A, B are false and D true. A low diffusivity slows penetration of temperature changes and can increase damping through a wall, C. Select C, D.
