The GATE Grind

GATE 2023 AR — Architecture – Question 65

Building Construction, Materials, and Structural Systems · Design with steel and RCC · 2 marks · Numerical answer

A simply supported RCC beam spans 4 m and carries a 250 mm thick, 2 m high brick wall over its full span. Beam section is 250 mm×600 mm. Unit weights are 18 kN/m³ for brickwork and 25 kN/m³ for RCC. Find maximum bending moment in kN·m, to one decimal place.

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: 25.4 to 25.6

Explanation

Wall load per metre is 0.25×2×18=9 kN/m. Beam self-weight is 0.25×0.60×25=3.75 kN/m. Total uniform load is 12.75 kN/m. For a simply supported beam Mmax=wL²/8=12.75×4²/8=25.5 kN·m. Omitting beam self-weight would underestimate the moment.
