GATE 2025 AR — Architecture – Question 63

Building Construction, Materials, and Structural Systems · Design with steel and RCC · 2 marks · Numerical answer

An RCC beam has width 250 mm, effective depth 400 mm, factored shear 120 kN and concrete shear strength 0.35 N/mm². Use two-legged 8 mm stirrups with steel yield 415 N/mm². Find design spacing in mm, to nearest integer.

Correct answer: 160 to 180

Explanation

Concrete resists 0.35×250×400=35000 N. Stirrups must resist 120000−35000=85000 N. Their area is 2×π×8²/4=100.531 mm². For vertical stirrups, Vus=0.87fyAsvd/s, so s=0.87×415×100.531×400/85000=170.812 mm, rounding to 171 mm. This is below the usual 0.75d spacing limit 300 mm.
