The GATE Grind

GATE 2025 AR — Architecture – Question 62

Building Construction, Materials, and Structural Systems · Building structural systems · 2 marks · Numerical answer

A simply supported beam under full-span UDL deflects 24 mm at midspan. Double its span and depth, keeping other parameters unchanged. Find new deflection in mm, as an integer.

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: 48 to 48

Explanation

For constant UDL intensity and elastic modulus, deflection is proportional to L⁴/I. With unchanged width and geometrically doubled depth, I increases by 2³=8. Span doubling contributes 2⁴=16. Deflection therefore doubles:24×16/8=48 mm. The load intensity is held fixed, not the total applied load.
