GATE 2024 AR — Architecture – Question 62

Building Construction, Materials, and Structural Systems · Building structural systems · 2 marks · Numerical answer

A vertically suspended 5 m aluminium rod has section 0.20×0.04 m and mass 21.20 kg/m. Use g=10 m/s² and E=70000 MPa. Find maximum tensile strain in microstrain, to two decimals.

Correct answer: 1.80 to 1.90

Explanation

Maximum tension occurs at the top, which supports the full rod weight:21.20×5×10=1060 N. Area is 0.008 m², so stress is 132500 Pa. Divide by E=70×10⁹ Pa to obtain 1.892857×10⁻⁶. The requested coefficient in microstrain is 1.89. Strain falls towards zero at the free bottom.
