GATE 2026 AR — Architecture – Question 63

Building Construction, Materials, and Structural Systems · Building structural systems · 2 marks · Numerical answer

Overhanging beam ABC has supports at A, B with AB 6 m and overhang BC 2 m. A 12 kN/m UDL covers the full 8 m. At an internal point P between A and B the bending moment is zero. Find AP in metres, to two decimals.

Correct answer: 5.10 to 5.50

Explanation

Total load is 96 kN at 4 m from A. Moment equilibrium about A gives RB×6=96×4, so RB=64 kN and RA=32 kN. At x from A within AB, M(x)=32x−12x²/2. The nonzero root is x=32/6=5.33333 m. Therefore AP=5.33 m; x=0 is the support itself rather than the internal point.
