GATE 2026 AR — Architecture – Question 62

Climatology and Environmentally Responsive Design · Thermal comfort in built environments · 2 marks · Numerical answer

A facade has 48 m² glazing with U=5.2 W/(m²°C), light-to-solar-gain ratio 1.5 and visible-light transmittance 0.6. Incident solar radiation is 400 W/m²; outdoor and indoor temperatures are 35°C and 20°C. Find total conduction-plus-radiation gain in kW, to two decimals.

Correct answer: 10.00 to 13.00

Explanation

LSG=VLT/SHGC, so SHGC=0.6/1.5=0.4. Conductive gain is UAΔT=5.2×48×15=3744 W. Solar gain is A×irradiance×SHGC=48×400×0.4=7680 W. Total is 11424 W=11.424 kW, or 11.42 kW. VLT is not itself the solar heat-gain coefficient.
