GATE 2026 ME – Question 59

Casting, Forming and Joining Processes · Bulk forming and sheet forming, estimation of load · 2 marks · Numerical answer

In a deep drawing operation of a rectangular sheet metal, 30% stretching in length results in 15% reduction in thickness. Assuming volume constancy, the normal anisotropy of the sheet metal is ________ (*rounded off to 2 decimal places*).

Correct answer: 0.60 to 0.62

Explanation

The true strain in length is $\ln 1.3 = 0.2624$ and in thickness it is $\ln 0.85 = -0.1625$. With volume constancy the width strain is $-(0.2624 - 0.1625) = -0.0998$. The normal anisotropy is the ratio of width strain to thickness strain: $R = \frac{-0.0998}{-0.1625} = 0.61$.
