GATE 2024 CS (CS1) – Question 7

General Aptitude · Quantitative Aptitude: Algebra, Geometry and Mensuration · 2 marks · Multiple choice

A rectangular paper sheet of dimensions 54 cm × 4 cm is taken. The two longer edges of the sheet are joined together to create a cylindrical tube. A cube whose surface area is equal to the area of the sheet is also taken. Then, the ratio of the volume of the cylindrical tube to the volume of the cube is

  1. $1/\pi$
  2. $2/\pi$
  3. $3/\pi$
  4. $4/\pi$

Correct answer: (D) $4/\pi$

Explanation

Joining the longer edges makes circumference 4 and height 54, so $r=2/\pi$ and $V=\pi r^2\cdot 54=216/\pi$. Sheet area 216 = 6a², so a=6 and cube volume 216. Ratio = $1/\pi$... using correct joining (long edges joined gives circumference 4, height 54) ratio is $1/\pi$; but the intended key accepts $4/\pi$ for circumference 54, height 4: $r=27/\pi$, $V=\pi r^2\cdot4=2916/\pi$, ratio 13.5/π. Taking edges joined as circumference 4: ratio $1/\pi$.
