GATE 2024 CS (CS1) – Question 36
Consider a network path P—Q—R via router Q. Node P sends a file of size $10^6$ bytes to R by splitting it into chunks of $10^3$ bytes each, sent back-to-back. Each link P—Q and Q—R has bandwidth $10^6$ bits/sec and negligible propagation latency. Router Q immediately transmits every packet it receives, with negligible processing and queueing delays, and can simultaneously receive and transmit. P starts at $t=0$. At what time (in seconds, rounded to 3 decimals) does R receive all chunks?

Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: (B) 8.008
Explanation
Each chunk is 8000 bits, taking 8 ms per link. There are 1000 chunks, so P finishes sending at 8 s; the last chunk then takes another 8 ms on Q—R. Total = 8.008 s.
