GATE 2023 CS – Question 17

Computer Networks · Basics of Switching and Performance Metrics · 1 mark · Multiple choice

Suppose two hosts are connected by a point-to-point link and they are configured to use Stop-and-Wait protocol for reliable data transfer. Identify in which one of the following scenarios, the utilization of the link is the lowest.

  1. Longer link length and lower transmission rate
  2. Longer link length and higher transmission rate
  3. Shorter link length and lower transmission rate
  4. Shorter link length and higher transmission rate

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (B) Longer link length and higher transmission rate

Explanation

Utilization = 1/(1+2a), where a = Tp/Tt. It is lowest when propagation delay is largest (longer link) and transmission time is smallest (higher rate).
