Correct answer: (D) vain

Explanation

The words sick, infirm and moribund describe the same condition at growing intensity, and silly, ?, daft must describe foolishness at growing intensity. Of the choices, only "vain" (empty, foolish, pointless) can sit between silly and daft. "Frown" and "vein" have nothing to do with foolishness, and "fawn" means to flatter.
