GATE 2025 CE (CE2) – Question 35

Geomatics Engineering · Maps, scale, coordinate systems, cartography and map projections · 1 mark · Numerical answer

A surveyor measured the distance between two points on the plan drawn to a scale of 1 cm = 40 m and the result was 468 m. Later, it was discovered that the scale used was 1 cm = 20 m.
The true distance between the points (in m) is ______ (round off to the nearest integer).

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: 234

Explanation

The surveyor read the plan distance as $\frac{468}{40} = 11.7$ cm using the wrong scale of 1 cm = 40 m. The plan was actually drawn to 1 cm = 20 m, so the true distance is $11.7 \times 20 = 234$ m.
