GATE 2023 CH – Question 39

Chemical Technology · Inorganic chemical industries · 2 marks · Multiple choice

Match the reactions in Group 1 with the catalysts in Group 2 listed in the table below.

a table. Group 1 has P) C₆H₆ + Cl₂ → Chlorobenzene + HCl, Q) H₂C=CH₂ + ½O₂ → Ethylene oxide, R) CH₃OH + ½O₂ → Formaldehyde + H₂O and S) Naphthalene + 9/2 O₂ → Phthalic Anhydride + 2H₂O + 2CO₂. Group 2 has I) Mixed oxide of Mo and Fe, II) V₂O₅, III) FeCl₃ and IV) Ag₂O.
  1. P-III, Q-IV, R-II, S-I
  2. P-III, Q-IV, R-I, S-II

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (B) P-III, Q-IV, R-I, S-II

Explanation

Chlorination of benzene uses the Lewis acid catalyst FeCl₃ (P-III). Ethylene is oxidised to ethylene oxide over silver (Ag₂O) (Q-IV). Methanol is oxidised to formaldehyde over the mixed Mo-Fe oxide (R-I). Naphthalene is oxidised to phthalic anhydride over V₂O₅ (S-II).
