The figures I, II and III are parts of a sequence. Which one of the following options comes next in the sequence at IV?

Three circles with a shaded sector. I: the top-left quarter (from 9 o'clock to 12 o'clock) is shaded. II: the sector from 12 o'clock to about 4:30 is shaded. III: the lower half (from 3 o'clock round to 9 o'clock) is shaded. Four options A to D show circles with other shaded sectors.

Correct answer: (B) Option B in the figure

Explanation

Measure the angles clockwise from 12 o'clock. The shaded sector has a width of 90, 135 and 180 degrees, which grows by 45 each time, so IV is 225 degrees wide. It starts at 270, 0 and 90 degrees, 90 further each time, so IV starts at 180 degrees (6 o'clock) and runs round through 9 and 12 o'clock to about 1:30. That is the big shaded sector on the left in option B.
