Plane stresses are $\sigma_{xx}=110$ MPa, $\sigma_{yy}=30$ MPa, $\tau_{xy}=40$ MPa. The normal stress on the shown 45° plane (nearest integer MPa) is ________.

Correct answer: 110

Explanation

The normal is at 45°, so $\sigma_n=(110+30)/2+40\sin90^\circ=110$ MPa.
