Solid State Physics · dia, para, ferro, antiferro and ferri magnetism, ferromagnetic domains · 1 mark · Multiple choice

The figure schematically shows the M (magnetization) - H (magnetic field) plots for certain types of materials. Here M and H are plotted in the same scale and units. Which one of the following is the most appropriate combination?

Magnetization versus applied field.
  1. (Q) - Paramagnet; (R) - Type-I Superconductor; (S) - Antiferromagnet
  2. (P) - Paramagnet; (Q) - Diamagnet; (R) - Type-I Superconductor
  3. (P) - Paramagnet; (Q) - Antiferromagnet; (R) - Type-I Superconductor
  4. (P) - Diamagnet; (R) - Paramagnet; (S) - Type-I Superconductor

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (B) (P) - Paramagnet; (Q) - Diamagnet; (R) - Type-I Superconductor

Explanation

The small positive slope P is paramagnetic; the small negative slope Q is diamagnetic. R has M = -H, the ideal Meissner response.
