GATE 2022 CE (CE1) – Question 62

Traffic Engineering and Transportation Planning · Traffic signs, signal design by Webster method, intersections and interchanges · 2 marks · Numerical answer

A two-phase signalized intersection is designed with a cycle time of 100 s. The amber and red times for each phase are 4 s and 50 s, respectively. If the total lost time per phase due to start-up and clearance is 2 s, the effective green time of each phase is ______s. (in integer)

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: 48

Explanation

For each phase, displayed green is $100-50-4=46$ s. Effective green includes green plus amber, less start-up and clearance lost time.

Thus $g_e=46+4-2=\mathbf{48}$ s per phase. The two phases provide 96 s effective green, consistent with 4 s total lost time per cycle.
