The shown reinforced T-beam has effective depth 500 mm, M35 concrete, Fe550 steel and tension reinforcement 400 mm². Material safety factor for 0.2% proof stress is 1.15 and Fe550 yield strain is 0.0044. As per IS 456:2000, find limiting neutral-axis depth from the extreme compression fibre (mm), nearest integer.

Correct answer: 220 to 224
Explanation
Limiting strain compatibility gives $x_{u,lim}/d=0.0035/(0.0035+0.0044)$. Hence $x_{u,lim}=221.519$ mm. Nearest integer is **222 mm**.
