Two steel plates are lap-jointed in a workshop with 6 mm fillet weld as shown. Weld ultimate strength is 410 MPa. As per IS 800:2007 limit-state design, find connection design capacity (kN), to three decimals.

Correct answer: 400 to 420
Explanation
The continuous U-shaped weld has actual length $200+120+200=520$ mm. Deduct 2s = 12 mm for the two terminal ends: effective length 508 mm. Throat is $0.7s=4.2$ mm. Shop-weld stress is $410/(\sqrt3\cdot1.25)$ N/mm². Capacity is $508(4.2)(410)/(\sqrt3\cdot1.25\cdot1000)=\mathbf{404.042}$ kN.
