GATE 2019 CE (CE1) – Question 46

Steel Structures · Connections: simple, eccentric, beam-column · 2 marks · Numerical answer

A 16 mm gusset plate is connected to a 12 mm I-section flange by 10 mm fillet welds on both sides as shown. Each weld is 500 mm long. A 350 kN point load acts 100 mm from the flange. Find maximum resultant stress on the fillet weld along the vertical plane (MPa), to one decimal place.

Correct answer: 78 to 78.2 OR 105.3 to 105.5

Explanation

Effective throat is $0.7(10)=7$ mm. Two 500 mm welds give throat area 7000 mm² and direct shear $\tau=350000/7000=50$ MPa. Weld-group section modulus is $2(7)(500^2)/6=583333.3$ mm³. Moment is $350000(100)=35\times10^6$ N·mm, giving normal stress σ = 60 MPa. Vector resultant is $\sqrt{60^2+50^2}=$ **78.1 MPa**. The official key also accepts **105.4 MPa**, the von Mises equivalent $\sqrt{60^2+3(50)^2}$. Both official grading alternatives are preserved.
