GATE 2019 ME (ME2) – Question 33

Fluid Mechanics · Viscous flow, boundary layer and elementary turbulent flow · 1 mark · Numerical answer

Water enters a 5.0 m long, 0.20 m diameter pipe at Reynolds number 500. Its velocity profile is uniform at inlet and parabolic at exit. Find exit Reynolds number.

Correct answer: 500 to 500

Explanation

Steady incompressible continuity in a constant-diameter pipe preserves the mean speed. Reynolds number is based on this mean speed, diameter and fluid properties, all unchanged. Hence exit Re remains **500**. The centreline speed changes as the profile develops, but it is not the Reynolds-number reference speed.
