GATE 2019 ME (ME2) – Question 55

Heat Transfer · Radiative heat transfer: laws, view factors, radiation network · 2 marks · Numerical answer

Three pairs of parallel plates LM, NR and PQ are shown. View factor $F_{IJ}$ is the fraction of radiation leaving I intercepted by J. Given $F_{LM}=0.8$ and $F_{NR}=0.4$, find $F_{PQ}$ to one decimal place.

Correct answer: .6 to .6

Explanation

The aligned central strip contributes 0.4. In the symmetric wider geometry, the two equal adjacent strips share $0.8-0.4=0.4$, each contributing 0.2. Geometry 3 includes the central strip and one adjacent strip. Hence **$F_{PQ}=0.4+0.2=0.6$**.
