GATE 2019 CE (CE1) – Question 62
A reinforced-concrete circular pile 12 m long and 0.6 m in diameter is embedded in stiff clay of undrained cohesion 110 kN/m². Adhesion factor is 0.5. Find net ultimate uplift load (kN), to one decimal place.

Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: 1240 to 1250
Explanation
Net ultimate uplift is shaft adhesion times embedded surface area: $$Q=\alpha c_u\pi DL=0.5(110)\pi(0.6)(12)=1244.0707\ \mathrm{kN}.$$ Answer **1244.1 kN**. Net capacity excludes pile weight and does not use toe bearing.
