GATE 2025 IN – Question 44

Measurements · Voltage current and power measurement · 2 marks · Multiple choice

A balanced three-phase load is measured by the two-wattmeter method. Its per-phase average power is 30 kW at lagging power factor $\sqrt3/2$. The wattmeter readings are

  1. 15 kW and 15 kW
  2. 22.5 kW and 7.5 kW
  3. 60 kW and 30 kW
  4. 45 kW and 45 kW

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (C) 60 kW and 30 kW

Explanation

Total real power is 3×30=90 kW.

Power factor √3/2 gives φ=30°.

Readings are VLILcos(30°−φ) and VLILcos(30°+φ), in ratio 1:1/2=2:1.

Dividing 90 kW in that ratio gives **60 kW and 30 kW, C**.
