GATE 2023 IN – Question 51

Sensors and Industrial Instrumentation · Resistive capacitive and inductive sensors · 2 marks · Numerical answer

A wire-wound ‘resistive potentiometer type' angle sensor with 72 turns is used in an application. The first turn of the potentiometer is connected to ground while its last turn is connected to 3.6 V. The width of the wiper covers two turns ensuring make- before-break. The output (wiper) voltage when the wiper is on top of both the turns 35 and 36 is _______V (rounded off to two decimal places).

Correct answer: 1.77 to 1.78

Explanation

Under the turn-section convention used by the official answer, bridging two adjacent turns removes one of 72 equal resistance sections. The lower 35 sections then give $V_{out}=3.6(35)/71=1.77465$ V, rounding to **1.77 V**. Endpoint-turn numbering and resistance-section counting require this distinction.
